Moped Maintenance in Hawaii. TIPS

Good morning Moped riders of Oahu and the rest of Hawaii. Here at Pacific Mopeds we do a lot of service and repairs on both our mopeds and mopeds from the other stores around Honolulu. Through our years of experience we have come up with a list of quick tips which should help you extend the life of your moped.
1. Regular Service: I know its a pain in the butt and when money is tight we would rather use it on something else, but regular maintenance is what keeps your moped running.
2. Buy the good stuff: if you have a 2stroke moped purchasing the more expensive 2stroke oil is highly recommended. There is a reason the walmart special is only a couple of $$. Also although the oils are all similar they are not the same, so stick to your guns and don't change oil manufacturers every bottle, your moped will perform better.
3. Listen & feel your moped: if you have missed your last service and the moped starts to make a new noise or starts to drive differently do not wait for 1000 miles. visit your regular service center and let them know your concerns.
4 Good Gas: If possible always use Ethanol Free gasoline. On Oahu there are about 5 or 6 gas stations that offer Ethanol free fuel. Ethanol is the enemy when it comes to small engines. If you cant get the Ethanol Free gas remember to periodically start your moped and let it idle for 3-5 minutes. Letting your moped sit for 10+ days could cause the ethanol to destabilize leading to your moped hard starting or not starting at all.  

For most people a moped is a means of transport here in Hawaii and although it may hurt to spend the cash on maintenance, it is a lot cheaper than having to purchase a new moped or having to ride the bus because you neglected the maintenance schedule.

2stroke vs 4stroke mopeds Pros, Cons

People ask all the time what the differences are between 2stroke and 4 stroke 50cc mopeds or scooters. Without getting into engine terminology the best way to explain it is: 4strokes work best on flat ground as they lack the bottom end torque that is needed to climb hills. The two stroke is best suited if you live in a hilly area as they will climb a much steeper grade of road. Additionally there are maintenance differences between each moped or scooter. The 2stroke requires oil to be added into the fuel prior to entering the carburetor. This can be done via the old method: premixing or via the new method: oil injection pump. The new method which is featured on most mopeds or scooters has an oil reservoir and a pump that adds the oil to the fuel system as it enters the Carburetor. The 4stroke motor is just like you car with an oil pan full of oil that needs to be changed every 1000+-.
So here in a basic list are the pros and cons of each style of moped or scooter.
             2stroke                                            4stroke
pros: better for hills, faster                        don't have to regularly fill up oil, less pollution

simple engine, easier engine upgrades        longer life span (due to slower motor)

Cons: more common engine failure           less capable on steeper hills, regular maintenance strictly adhered to.
constant oil adding, noisier                        more expensive engine upgrades, complex motor.


Results: for those of us driving on flat ground with our moped or scooter as a run around commuter EX: Waikiki. The 4stroke engine is best suited. If you live up in the hills of Honolulu or intend on taking your moped around the island of Oahu on the weekends 2stroke models would be your best bet.

NEW MOPED LAWS in HAWAII

All moped riders in Hawaii it is now time to come together. The state legislation has put forward two laws which would hurt all dealers of mopeds in Honolulu and Hawaii, Also additional costs will be felt by customers looking to buy a moped in Hawaii. The first is SB873 which would require yearly insurance for mopeds, mopeds are already covered the same as bicycles in accidents involving vehicles. This law was introduced by Sam Slom, send this guy an email telling him the reason we use mopeds is because they are cheap economical way for people to get around town

The second Measure SB829 is a straight up money grab, it will require yearly registration, which is going to be close to impossible to enforce. also this affects us lowly moped riders we ride mopeds for economical reasons and dont have big money to influence politics but we can make some noise so its time to make noise send your complaints to these senators who backed this bill.

Hawaii Moped News and Tips

Ok Hawaii Moped Riders or those looking to buy a Moped. Here are some thoughts on buying a New Moped as well as Maintaining a New Moped
Buying a Moped:
1. The Shop is trying t Sell you a moped so they will talk down the competition
2. Some shops suggest that they install extra parts unique to their mopeds. (This means that they can only fix them)
3.Buy a Moped not based on looks but what feels comfortable, Always be able to put your feet on the ground with ease.
4.Never ever be pushed into buying a moped because of the super one time deal that is only going on today. BS

Now you have bought your new moped and are cruising the streets of Honolulu, Kihei or Kona
Maintenance:
1. The moped has an engine it is not a bicycle if you don't do the required service the moped no matter which model will break down
2. Dont worry if you have little issues with your moped when you first get it, for the first 300 miles or so the moped is breaking in,
3. If you have a 2stroke moped which requires regular oil fill ups, do not wait until the light comes on be proactive and top it off with oil when you gas up. Use the good oil its worth it.
4. go over your moped once a month with screw driver and wrench and tighten all loose bolts and screws. In Hawaii the roads are rough and your moped will tend to loosen bolts and screws. Better to be safe then drop your muffler on the street.

So there is once more talk of a racing track being built out in Kapolei. Moped Racing is fun and safer than racing around a track on your new R1. As summer heats up we see more and more mopeds out and about in Honolulu. Recently we took a trip and saw some unreal mopeds and scooters. If anyone out there in Hawaii has a sick tricked out moped let us know. We always love seeing cool mopeds that are in Hawaii. Why to Buy a name brand.

So many moped "dealers" in Hawaii have house brands, these include BRAVO, GTX Turbocam, Mangusta, Islander, PRONTO.
Now we are not saying these Moped Brands are bad quality however be cautious. With no Idea who the real manufacturer is it is very hard to get parts in Hawaii or at all. This means that you have to deal with the dealer you bought the moped from, also if they go out of business there is no way to get parts for these mopeds.
Do some research, try to find a company website for BRAVO or GTX Turbocam and you will find that there is no such company.

Mopeds in Hawaii an Update

so recently the Honolulu Advertiser published a story about mopeds citing recent accidents and excessive speeds for reasons the State of Hawaii is forming a panel to look at new moped laws.
Regarding speeding and Accidents. Firstly, There is already a Moped speed limit of 30mph set by the State. It is up to the Police Dept to enforce these speed limits. By creating new laws that require motorcycle endorsements and insurance ect. we will removing this inexpensive environmentally friendly mode of transportation. 99% of all moped drivers follow the laws of Hawaii's roads much like 99% of auto drivers follow Hawaii's road laws. Why is it that we don't then limit motor vehicles to a top speed of 65mph? If someone is going to speed or drive crazy no new law is going to stop them. Rather Have the POLICE do their JOB and enforce the LAWS. Moped Riders stand up for your Rights don't let the Government try and take our Rides away from us.

So I heard from a little birdy that the State is looking to have us safety check and license our mopeds each year. With the State of Hawaii hungry for some money they see us as an easy target. Well get out there and tell them enough is enough. We ride mopeds to save money, not pay more money.

New Hydrogen Moped

Chinese company begins exporting hydrogen mopeds

Nearly a year ago, we first laid eyes on a hydrogen-powered moped from the Shanghai Pearl Hydrogen Power Source Technology Company. Although the machine had, um... questionable aesthetics, we were impressed by its 60-mile range at 15 miles per hour and relatively low $2,600 price tag. According to a report on Shanghai Daily, 30 of the hydrogen-fed units have already been exported. By 2011, the Chinese manufacturer hopes to be building 1,000 units per year for sale both in China and abroad. Considering that many electric two-wheelers already cost more than the hydrogen-powered ebike from Shanghai, there could be a real market for these vehicles, though the hydrogen fueling infrastructure is most definitely still in its infancy. Other brands, such as Suzuki and Intelligent Energy, have plans to introduce hydrogen-powered fuel cell cycles of their own. Both the Crosscage and ENV, though, would surely cost significantly more than their Chinese counterparts.[Source: Shangai Daily via Faster and Faster]
